What is the Traffic Offender Program?

The Traffic Offenders Program is an option available to Magistrates after a person has been found guilty of a traffic offence but prior to sentencing to seek to educate offenders. It may also be used by the Probation and Parole Service in the management of offenders who are on existing Probation or Parole orders.

The program is designed to increase participants understanding of their social commitments in general and traffic laws in particular. When sentencing an offender, a magistrate may take into account any changes of attitude exhibited by the offender while participating in this program.

The Traffic Offender Program is an initiative by the NSW Police Service to inform the public about the road rules and what some of the consequences of breaking those rules can lead to. This program is supported by other community and government organizations such as

The Police and Community Youth Club,

The Victims of Traffic Accidents (VISTA),

The NRMA (National Roads and Motorists Association),

The NSW Ambulance Service,

The RTA (Roads and Traffic Authority),

and local politicians and community leaders.

How Long is the Program?

The program is run in 8 two-hour sessions in the Sutherland Police and Community Youth Club facility.

What Happens at these Sessions?

Each week a different topic is discussed or demonstrated. Volunteers for the various contributing organizations will explain, discuss and demonstrate a particular topic. At the end of each session, an assignment is issued to each participant, which will be submitted the following session. These assignments are marked and an assessment of the participant's progress is made. If the participant is to attend a court hearing after completion of the program, the assessment will be forwarded on to the relevant court.
