BUCHAREST -- Romania's River Shipping Association blocked the River Danube at the 371st kilometre at Calarasi on Monday, in protest against an international oil embargo in force against neighbouring Yugoslavia.

The shippers are determined to keep the protest blockade on for three days, as a warning to the government to take the necessary steps to lift the embargo, which hurts the Romanian shippers, already in a precarious financial position.

Their frequent requests of the government for financial facilities have been met with nothing more substantial than promises.

According to Transport Minister Traian Basescu, the shippers are justified in their protest, as they have suffered most of all in Romania from NATO's recent aggression on Yugoslavia.

Basescu said that those who have blocked navigation in the Danube by demolishing bridges in Yugoslavia should now solve the problem.
