TWO people were killed and four injured when mortars were fired at a village in eastern Kosovo.
Serb news agencies reported that the victims were Serbs from near Gnjilane where tit-for-tat killings have been continuing for days. Nato officials confirmed the reports but said they did not know the ethnic origin of the victims.
The incident in the American sector is the latest in what has become a routine body count as ethnic Albanians and Serbs fight a quiet war for control of territory and mafia groups extend their grip over the burgeoning Kosovo economy.
Up to 10 explosions were heard near the village of Donja Budriga by American soldiers who saw flashes of light from a neighbouring ethnic Albanian settlement. The attackers fled in a car. Zivka Sentic, a local Serb whose house was damaged, said: "I was in bed when I heard a big bang and the house started to shake."
The incident followed a mortar attack on the nearby village of Petrovce on Tuesday. Russian peacekeepers later detained a suspect who had mortar safety pins in his pocket. Yesterday morning, after a third attack in which no one was injured, American soldiers found several Chinese-made 81mm mortars.
