NIS -- A Yugoslav Army commander said on Friday that the Yugoslav Army was firmly committed to return to Kosovo-Metohija and secure the state's historical borders in that province as soon as possible.

General Nebojsa Pavkovic, commander of the 3rd Army, was speaking at a function in the south Serbian (Yugoslav) city of Nis on the occasion of Border Guards Day.

"We therefore welcome all measures taken by our president and our state to return part of our army and police units to Kosovo- Metohija, in line with U.N. Resolution 1244 and in the interests of all who wish to live in peace in this country," Pavkovic said.

He went on to say that the border guards had always given selfless service and successfully protected the inviolability of state territory.

He said that the Pristina Corps' border guards had heroically stood shoulder to shoulder with the other defence forces during NATO's aggression on Yugoslavia and in combatting ethnic Albanian separatists in Kosovo-Metohija last spring.

This year's Border Guards Day, he went on to say, was being observered in a complex and difficult situation, but the Yugoslav Army would do its patriotic duty to the full.

"There are many in our immediate neighbourhood and further afield, and there is a handful of them in Yugoslavia, who would like Yugoslavia to be further destabilised and destroyed, and who are working to destroy it from the outside and from the inside.

"They are forgetting that the Yugoslav Army has always been a guarantor of peace and stability and of the protection of the territorial integrity and the constitutional system of our state," he said.
