JAGODINA - The conduct of the U.S. and British KFOR troops in the region of Pristina and Kosovska Mitrovica has forced major mines in this region - Ajvalija, Novo Brdo, Badovac and Kisnica to halt operations and send home their 670 workers who were driven out of the mines, Trepca Mining and Metallurgy Complex General Director Novak Bijelic has said.
"The resulting damages are estimated at 50 million dollars," Bijelic told the local Jagodina television station on Friday evening.
He stated, however, that although UNMIK and KFOR are capable of forcefully "amputating" certain parts of the mining system, they will never "occupy" the entire Trepca complex nor will they even participate in its management because it is owned by its shareholders and this cannot be changed.
"The shareholders demanded at a meeting from UNMIK chief Bernard Kouchner that all usurped property is returned to Trepca, that it is allowed to resume the expoitation of the natural resources, industrial water, roads and railways and that the workers can come to work safely," Bijelic set out.
