1998 BMW E39 M5
400bhp 5.0lt V8
over a decade ago, the first M5 created an entirely new class of automobile: a
high-performance saloon combining the dynamic, yet practical BMW 5 Series sedan
body with the thoroughbred sports car engine of the legendary BMW M1. A vehicle
able to dispatch kilometres with disdain and with unique sporting flair,
blending exceptional performance, handling and braking, with outstanding comfort
and discreet elegance.
The
new third generation M5 is faithful to this 'wolf in sheep's clothing' formula,
yet introduces an entirely new dimension of dynamic performance.
While
it began as a powerful and supremely capable six cylinder saloon, the mighty M5
now harbours a thundering 294kW/500Nm 5.0 litre M-tuned V8 engine beneath its
deceptively-normal 5 Series bonnet.
Understatement
is once again the name of the game, however the clues to the 'wolf' in the M5
are there for the knowledgeable to recognise: an aggressive front air dam, large
diameter, satin finish light-alloy wheels with fat ultra-low profile tyres and
four telltale engine pipes beneath the deeper rear diffuser.
However
it is on the open road that the M5 reveals its true supercar persona, with its
combination of supreme chassis dynamics and unmatched performance, clearly
identifying it as the only real sports car in the world of high-performance
saloons.
