Sheikh Mujibur Rahman | |||
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born on 21/03/1922
in Tungipara, a village in Gopalganj
District
in the province of Bengal (then East
Pakistan).
He was the President of Bangladesh
from 10/01/1972
to 12/01/1972, Prime Minister from
13/01/1972
to 25/01/1975, and then President for
Life
from 25/01/1975 until he and some of
his
family members were assassinated by
a group
of disgrunted army officers at the
Presidential
Residence on 15/08/1975. Whilst we know that most banknotes issued by the Bangladesh Bank, past and present, do not always depict the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. It should be noted that the above notes were issued when Bangladesh was governed by the Awami League, led by Sheikh Hasina Wajed, who is also the daughter of the late Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She was the Prime Minister of Bangladesh from 1996 until 2001 when she lost the election to Bangladesh Nationist Party headed by Khaleda Zia. Since then all new banknotes issued without the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. | |||
