Yes, they were "just a band who happened to make it very big," as John once stated. Primarily, it was the music. The publicity and media turned them into something else, unfortunately.
From early-on, they had a great groove, they played and sang well together, and they were willing to think outside the box musically and lyrically. As they grew and developed together, they evolved as they creatively bounced ideas and concepts off each other.
The film "A Hard Days' Night" is a fav - it almost captured and personified the moment. It's a shame they were eventually so stressed by the expectations due their huge-fame. Being 'Mop Tops' was a drag after a while for them. All they wanted to do was play - and the studio gave them the space to do that to the best of their (and our) advantage.

Here are two incredibly rare Beatles'-related photos! Both relate directly to their 1967 LP experience, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".
On 9th January 2002, I was awarded a Diploma of Beatleology, graduating as a 'Beatles Philosopher' with a Beatle IQ of 95%.
On 9th April 2003, I got back to Beatle College again, and after successfully completing their intensive course, I was awarded a fresh Diploma of Beatleology, graduating anew as a 'Beatles Philosopher' with a Beatle IQ of 99%.
