NATCON 2002 - Flames of War WWII Competition

10.04.02 - RESULTS

Firstly, I'd like to thank Rex Hurley who did most of the work for the Flames Of War competition and provided some great terrain to fight over. There were three scenarios set up and each player fought each battle from both sides. The games were challenging and a lot of fun.

The players were:
Kevin Foxall
Aaron Leslie
Stu Prince
David Shead
Richard Steer
Mark Thorpin
Phil Yates

After seven hard-fought battles, the results were:
1st Mark Thorpin
2nd Aaron Leslie (despite missing a game!)
3rd Phil Yates

Cheers
Phil Yates

INTRODUCTION

Hello and welcome to the Flames of War competition. This competition is a bit different in that its purpose is to promote WW2 wargaming to members of the public and South Island Wargamers versus the normal full on competition. To achieve this goal Matt Stevens is providing some incentives from Historic Games, I will be supplying some tables of scintillating sculpted scenery and you guys will be providing the figures and camadarie to make it a success.

For those of you who are interested in playing but don't have an army, drop me a line at rex.hurley@ccc.govt.nz or phone me at home (03) 385 2210 (before 2100hrs) and we will see what we can do to get you involved.

FORMAT

In keeping with the spirit of this competition the format is somewhat different from the norm in that all games will be scenario based and players will only play with their own armies in the first round. They will then move on each round playing each scenario with a new army. The players own army will remain at the scenario they played in the first round and will be used as the force for that scenario for the rest of the competition.

The competition will be six rounds played over the three days. There will be 2 rounds a day of 3-4 hours duration including set up and briefing time. If there are seven players the competion will be run as a round robin, if less as a round robin with a final, if more as a Swiss Chess competition.

Each player will play (hopefully) 2 attack, 2 defence and 2 encounter games (this will depend upon numbers and game results). Attack and Encounter forces will be 1500 points. Defenders forces will be a 1000 points (yes a 1,000 but they get all sorts of goodies). All lists are to be generated from Flames of War Intelligence Briefings unless these don't exist in which case contact me. See http://www.flamesofwar.com/.

All rule disagreements should be decided using dice and then have a chat over a beer later, although Phil Yates the author of Flames of War will be in attendance (but not as an umpire).

On registering players should indicate what army/armies they wish to provide for the competition. On receipt of this information I will contact you individually and request you to compile a 1,000 or 1,500 point list dependent upon what role your force will have. Dependent upon the numbers playing in the competition you may also be asked to assist in the provision of base cloth's and terrain.

Thats all for now. Look forward to hearing from you, let the dice roll, the beer flow and the laughs (or screams at dice rolls of one) begin.

Rex

P.S. Register before 28 February if you can otherwise it is going to cost you as the registration fee increases exponentially.
