"Our Wedding Day"

8th April 2000

Moonta Uniting Church

I spent the night before at my parents house & Mark stayed at our house (where we had been living together for 2 years). I was like a child on Xmas Eve waiting for sunlight to come so I could go and open my presents. I'm sure I only managed about 3 hours sleep!

When it was time to get up Dad heard me walking around & called out, "It looks like a nice day for a wedding, I wonder who's getting married today!" I ran into their room & jumped on the end of their bed, "I'm getting married today!" The lack of sleep made no difference, I was on such a high & full of energy & excitement.

7.30am Mum & I headed off to the hairdressers & got halfway down the road before realising I'd forgotten my headpiece so we had to go back and get it, good start to the day, already late for my first appointment. 8.00am my MOH & BM's arrived then soon after one of my sisters friends (who was a guest at our wedding) arrived to also have her hair done with champers & orange in hand. It was so thoughtful and helped us to relax, a little.

Mum & I returned home around 11.00 am to await 2 of my friends who were coming to do my make-up and nails. At this point I decided the champagne wasn't a good idea & had to sit quietly in a chair for a while as I was feeling rather nervous & anxious. The girls then returned from the hairdressers & it was time to get on with the make-up & nails.

The phone rang & it was Mark, he wanted to tell me he loved me & couldn't wait to see me at the church, it was great to hear his voice & for a few moments I didn't feel nervous, and couldn't wait for the time to pass & get to the church. All morning I kept saying to Mum, "Pinch me, I can't believe this day is really here & I'm getting married!"

Hair, make-up & nails done all that was left to do was get dressed & for the flowers to arrive. It was getting late & I began to panic - no flowers! I can't walk down the aisle without flowers ! I was really worried & didn't know what to do, the florist said they would be delivered around 1 pm & it was now 2 pm. My sister tried to call him, but there was no answer so everyone suggested perhaps I should get dressed to take my mind off the flowers & of course this is when they arrived. We then discovered the florist had forgotten the ribbon for the second car, which had just arrived, several phone calls & the ribbon was finally delivered in just enough time.

About 2.30pm the photographer arrived & began taking photo's in my parent's lounge room. While he was doing this the limo also arrived & then the video guy was soon after. While waiting for me to have photo's taken, the BM's & Dad quickly downed a glass of Glayva (liqueur whisky), I had a small sip but was just too nervous. The girls then all complained they were hot (no wonder) and were looking rather flushed!! It gave us a laugh & settled a few nerves.

Then it was off to the church. Mum & Dad came with me in the limo & the BM's went in the Burgundy statesman we'd borrowed from a friend. Just as we were nearing the church the limo driver changed the song on the CD to, "Going To The Chapel" which really got the nerves going, "Wow I was about to be married!"

As my Dad is Scottish I wanted something special, so we arranged for a piper and we walked down the aisle to the beautiful sound of bagpipes, which was kept as a surprise from most of the guests. This was just fantastic, it was really loud & sent shivers through me & most of the guests.

My Dad looked so proud in his kilt & I couldn't stop grinning as we walked down the aisle. The ceremony was beautiful & the minister added such a wonderful personal touch with his own words. The most memorable part was when the sun came shinning through one of the stained glass windows just on the 2 of us, it was as if we were truly being blessed.

We were also piped out of the church & greeted with mountains of confetti & rose petals from our guests. After a few photo's we headed across the road & had a fantastic photo with all our guests with the church in the background.

We then went to a private garden for more photo's with just the bridal party, and both our parents. When we arrived their were drinks & nibbles waiting for us, although I don't actually remember if I had anything to eat, but I know the limo driver kept following me with a bottle of champagne so I know I definitely had a few drinks :o) (without being silly & drunk!)

The whole bridal party then 'piled' into the limo & we headed for the reception.

We entered to the announcement of MR & MRS STEVENS !! I remember thinking, wow I've done it, I'm now MRS STEVENS!

Our MC was a close friend of both of us who had actually been the one to introduce us when we first met. He provided many laughs for the evening. Dad provided entertainment also with everyone wanting to know what a Scotsman wears under his kilt. Several guests were spotted on their hands & knees trying to sneak a look!

My Nana said a "Scottish Grace" which was really special to us. Although with her 'thick' Scottish accent I knew it would baffle the guests so I had printed the words on the menu's and had great fun translating the meaning in "Aussie" terms throughout the night.

Mark's speech was great, it even brought a few tears! He told everyone that when Dad was walking me down the aisle he just wanted to run to me & bring me down the aisle himself. The BM's some how managed to get toasted several times by mistake, which became a real joke by the end of the night.

We then had the usual traditions, dancing, drinking, mingling, etc. We cut the cake & then danced our Bridal Waltz to Bryan Adams, "I'll Always Be Right There". I don't think we took our eyes off each other as we quietly sang the words.

After the throwing of the bouquet (not my real one) & garter, our guests formed an arch with their hands as we walked through & said our thanks & goodbye's. We were then driven to our motel for the night.

The next day we collected our presents from Mark's parents (who had taken them home from the reception) finished packing & left for our honeymoon.

It was definitely the best day of my life, perfect weather, shared with family & friends & great food.

The days was "everything I'd dreamed it would be & more!"
