Newsletter (March 2001)

PFLAGSouth has been meeting since MAY 1999 when we formed as a small support group

The year 2001 has started well. We have welcomed one new member and are looking forward to meeting two more at our next meeting on 26th March

WEBSITE

We continue to work on the website. The current project is to publish the stories of more of our members, as people who have visited the web pages have shown great interest in this area. We plan to add more helpful information as it is available

UNIVERSITY ORIENTATION WEEK

Several of our members made themselves available to attend our publicity display. We found that there was interest in our educational leaflets for young people and their parents.

POLYTECHNIC ORIENTATION

We also attended a lunchtime publicity barbecue with “UNI Q” the campus gay and lesbian group and distributed our leaflets, and also smaller cards with our contact information, and a few parent and young people’s leaflets.  The Polytechnic has placed publicity posters on all of their 12 notice boards. We were also asked to contribute a short article for “GYRO” the Polytech newsletter, to raise awareness of how homophobic attitudes can make the community an unsafe atmosphere for young people who are gay, lesbian or bisexual.

VICTIM SUPPORT

We have given a presentation at a training course for Victim Support trainees who need to have an awareness of many aspects of the lives of the people that they will attend to. The Otago Youth Wellness Trust who is interested in our work has also contacted us.

NEXT MEETING

Monday 26th March at 7.30.  Speaker Ayesha Verrall,
