A Mother Supports PFLAG

I heartily support, and am grateful for the establishing of a branch of PFLAG South in Dunedin.

It is many years since I had to face the knowledge that my son was gay, to come to terms with it and to welcome his partner as another loved member of our family.

My husband and I were completely naive and had failed to observe what perhaps should have been obvious. The revelation was a shock to us and we had difficulty in dealing with it - not that it made any difference to our love for him, but for a period there was great difficulty in acknowledging the fact to some of the family and friends.  It was not made any easier by reason of the fact that we were active members of a conservative church.

We had an urge to pursue the subject of homosexuality and we tried to find books which would help us understand the reasons. There were also a few books on how other parents had faced up to the situation, but there were few people with whom we could discuss the subject and certainly at the time we knew no other parents with whom we could share our common problem.

It is many years since we faced and dealt with our fears, but it would have been helpful to have had access to a group like PFLAG in those early days.  Even now there are times when it takes courage in certain situations to acknowledge the position.  In belonging to this group I can both give and receive support.
