New Shadow Ministers available to be lobbied!

The retirement of one MP was used as an opportunity to reshuffle the Shadow Cabinet. Simon
Crean identified in a media release from 23 August 2002 that the job prospects
of unemployed Australians are a priority for Labor and that he has appointed
Anthony Albanese to take a key role in this area as Shadow Minister for
Employment Services and Training.

Sent your e-mail to: A.Albanese.MP@aph.gov.au

Economist David Cox, the former Shadow Employment Services Minister from the seat of Kingston south of Adelaide, will be using his economic and financial skills as
Labors Assistant Treasury spokesman.

His e-mail address is: David.Cox.MP@aph.gov.au

Annette Ellis has become the Shadow Mininster for Ageing and Seniors and Assisting on Disabilities.
Her e-mail address is Anette.Ellis.MP@aph.gov.au

And Wayne Swan, the Member for Lilley, is still Shadow Minister for Family and Community Services.
Here is his e-mail address: Wayne.Swan.MP@aph.gov.au

Write to them if you are bothered by something in regards to your job search or Centrelink
issues. More people write to MPs and complain about dole bludgers than
unemployed people complain about the system!

Statement in regards to the events in Palestine - from a few members

We demand an immediate investigation into the massacre in the Jenin refugee camp and also into the legality of holding the head of the Palestinensian State under house arrest.

We demand that the UN shows it has the moral courage to condemn the State of Israel for its continuing occupation of Palestine and its almost entire destruction of the West Bank refugee camps and infra structure. All this goes against the peace agreement of Camp David. And the behaviour goes against the Geneva Convention, if they consider this a war. If not, it is against all moral principles and human rights to keep people under siege in a church, let alone at the birthplace of Jesus.

Where are the heads of churches? Where is the solidarity of decent human beings?

We have to unite against this New World Order, where anything goes as long as it serves the establishment!

Please take a look at our extra page it contains a poem from September 1, 1939.

Who we are

We are an alliance of unions, welfare organisations and community services organisations and the un-/ underemployed people of Australia.

We want to give unemployed people of all ages, gender and race a voice in decisions which will affect us.

We want to encourage unemployed citizens to exercise our rights to social, economic and cultural resources and most importantly our right to work.

What we want to achieve

When the news sank in about the changes to the Work for the Dole program and the tightening of the Activity Agreement, some of us had enough.

We are a group of friends: parents, young people, unemployed, underemployed, poor in financial resources, yet keen and active to contribute to our society through our work.

We found that the voice of unemployed people is hardly audible and we recognised that in order to gain credibility, we had to link up with existing networks.

We believe that our plight is not isolated from that of employed people, therefore we are keen to forge links with unions, so we can work together for the creation of decent working conditions and opportunities for all.

We know that many organisations have actively and successfully lobbied on our behalf in the past. Therefore we would like to continue to co-operate with these organisations, access some of their resources, expertise, and ideally forge a close working relationship with NGOs.

As we hope to be able to remain independent of direct government funding, we may be able to speak up, where our ‘allies’ could be risking next years’ funding.

United we are strong, divided we’ll fall !

Our Mission

We see as our mission to relentlessly pursue the human, economic and social rights of the unemployed, underemployed people of Australia, regardless of age, gender or race, We do this in order to achieve a society where material goods and resources are more evenly distributed, social and ecological capital is equally valued in comparison to economic capital, and all beings are treated with respect and dignity regardless of their standing within society.

How you can participate

If you are participating in an organisation or group which benefits or advocates on behalf of unemployed people, ask your organisation to become an affiliated member. Once they are a member, you can ask for their endorsement in form of a letter and represent your group on our subcommittees.  You can be voted onto our Management Committee, but are expected to represent the interests of our members, and not those of the organisation you are representingIf you are un/underemployed (you do not need to be registered as unemployed) you can become a member and stand for any position on the Management Committee or volunteer for any other kind of work. Anyone interested in supporting our work is invited to participate and contribute to our:

What we are doing

We are lobbying actively for our rights and welfare as representatives of Australia’s un- and underemployed people. We are raising the issues affecting us on all levels of government and are aiming to make our voice heard, wherever we ‘are discussed, legislated or policed’. We are providing a referral and support system for people affected by current legislation and policies. We offer opportunities to participate and gain experience in

  1. undertaking small research projects about aspects of our situation,
  2. developing and submitting policy reviews, advocacy and paralegal assistance,
  3. writing, designing and editing our newsletter, establishment of communication networks,
    e-mail, website, chat rooms, etc.
Anyone experienced in these areas is very welcome to lend a hand.Contact us now:
