Guides Victoria Internet Unit catering for Guides 14-18 years of age. Before belonging to a unit points 1-4 must be completed.

New youth members to Guides Australia must complete a Youth Registration Form and Unit Registration Form.

Unit Registration Form to be completed by all unit members and to be signed by geographical District Leader, Region Leader or Lones Region Leader.

Unit Registration Form to be returned to Unit Leader by post. Girls may belong to only one Unit but may be attached temporarily to another. As per Guides Australia Guidelines 2.8.1.

Unit to comprise of 1 or more Qualified Guiding Leader with a minimum of 4 youth and maximum of 10 youth.

Unit to be established on Yahoo!Groups (or similar) with chat room as a closed list for unit members only.

Within the Group, each unit member is to complete their Personal Details information page including their name, email address and something about themselves.

Unit positions to include Chairman, Secretary and Webmaster. These positions are to be held by Unit members who are elected for 12 months. Other positions may be created as required. The unit is to operate in accordance with the Unit Council guidelines, published in May & June 2001 editions of Communicating.

Unit to have a Web page with a similar address as the Yahoo group and be maintained by the unit webmaster.

It is suggested that the Unit hold a face-to-face Annual General Meeting every year and all unit members are required to attend. AGM to consist of Unit council elections, Report on past 12 months events, Report on upcoming events, Treasurer’s Report, etc.

Unit to meet face to face at least twice a year (as well as the AGM).

Meeting night and starting times to be consistent throughout the year and decided upon by the unit.

A meeting of each month to be compulsory (eg first meeting of the month) for all unit members and meeting to be at least 2 hours. Meeting could include such things as Unit Council, Activities Update and Awards assessment.

Every other week online chats in the unit Yahoo Group to be between 1 to 2 hours depending on the time set by unit members. Unit members to make a significant contribution to the web page at least once a term (recommended more regulary eg once a month). Suggestions for contributions include suggestions for planning unit activities, activities attended, reports on badge syllabus for assessment, etc.

Unit fees to be minimum and to include cost of subscription to youth publication or communicating. Recommend $20 unit fees plus $9.35 for Lost the Plot subscription, $20 for Communicating subscription $15 for 18-30AM. In addition to unit fees, youth members pay for any metal badges that they earn. Fund raising can be done to assist with the cost of metal badges.

Peer assessment to be conducted via the web page. Guides send the information to the webmaster who posts it on the web page and then lets everyone in the unit know that it is there. Then, at the next unit meeting the unit discusses the assessment of the presented badge work. During this meeting the prospective awardee is “kicked out” of the chat room so that members can talk freely and openly on this information presented for assessment. Upon completion of the discussion the prospective awardee is invited back into the chat room for an update on the discussions.

Re-affirmation of promise is via the chat room and also at the next face-to-face meeting that the member attends.

All guides must complete a challenge before becoming a unit member. The unit is to establish a way of challenging each youth member before becoming a unit member.

Unit name to be suggested, voted and agreed to by all unit members.

The Unit Leader reports to the Lones Region Leader.

The Unit Leader is to be the Unit Treasurer and other bank account signatories to be youth members of the Unit (eg Chairman and Treasurer).

The Unit Leader must be in attendance at all unit chat meetings.

The Unit Leader is to keep records of membership, achievements, camps, etc. for all Unit Members.

The Unit Leader is to be the Owner/Moderator of the Chat Room.

If a program is required to be purchased for creation and maintenance of the Unit Web Page, then this program should be purchased by the Unit and handed on to each successive Unit Web Master.
