President’s Report

Well the start of a successful summer season with a good turnout to the Blossom Festival, although the weather led to a lot of indoor activities. Hello to members.  Good to see Bruce with the Mk II looking great.  Also the Mk III from Mosgiel.  Approximately twelve cars from Southland, five from South Canterbury and one from the Big River Club making a good number.

It‘s time now to start thinking and organizing for the Christchurch Southern Connection and the International Convention at Brisbane.  Both are on at Easter -2002.

The flats are going OK.  The section has not been cleared so a stir up is due.  There will be a ring around soon for a parts shed cleanup.

The Convention Committee is going well with a lot of grand work now done.

Thanks all….Adrian

Secretary’s Report

Well another season complete at the works and do my bones and joints need a little spell??  Our sincere thanks to all who sent cards, phoned, brought food, flowers and attended the funeral our fathers, fathers-in-law and Grandad who we lost so suddenly last month.  Knowing others were thinking of us at that time was a great comfort.

I have a flyer from ZZC Christchurch asking how many members would be interested in attending next years Southern Connection at Easter 2002.  In need to know by end of October at the very latest.

The last two outings have been fun filled nights.  We haven’t laughed so much in months so it certainly does you good to get out and about.  Hope you all have a neat time cruisin’ in Alexandra sunshine - but some people have to stay home and work!   Oooo you’re using that 4 letter word Joycee

Catch you later.   .Joyce

Club Captain’s Report

Hi everyone,

Blossom Festival this year had a great turnout of Z cars with 14 from Southland and 4 from Timaru.  Cold weather had put a damper on a few things, but everyone let their hair down for Saturday night drinks with our President setting the example for fellow members, as some of the photos might suggest.

Mike Gutsell is organizing a bit of a run in Invercargill for the month of October and plans for the Cromwell Xmas doo are progressing with a possible get-together for a small run on the Saturday afternoon with the Central Hot Rod and Custom Club.  This will include a drive around old Bannockburn, some vineyards and maybe a look at the gold mining town in Kawerau Gorge.  The girls from Gore are finding out about accommodation and we will have a confirmed date on this ASAP.

Goose and June have informed me that their house in Cromwell will be available for the Club party on Saturday and Sunday, so I will be sending proper flyers out  -  about October 20th.    Wayne

Outings Report – Alexandra Blossom Festival

Friday 21st September.  What car are we going to the Blossom Festival in?  The Mk I Zodiac had the most petrol, new oil and filter.

5:30pm Mike Nyhan and Amanda Frew arrived to travel up to Alex in their immaculate MkIII with Grace, Dallas and myself.  We traveled 60-65 mph.  Twice we were passed by Mike’s grey beast.  Arrived at our hosts Wayne and Wendy Campbell at 10 to 8pm  Gosh, the old Mk I went b…well.  A FULL Late night as usual

Saturday morning (late) spit and polish, drive down to start of the procession, good to meet up with the Timaru Zephyr members.  Main street of Alex,…shit a lot of people!   Was it the cold weather that stopped the multitudes going into the park - or the $7 per person to get in?

Great parade going by John Hawkins photos in Monday’s Southland Times 24th September.

Dave B found the Speights tent and saw nothing, I can vouch for that.  Back to Brandon Street to Wayne’s W___ Room.  Great guitar playing Wayne.!!!

Sunday morning (coming down)  We went to Muttontown to see some wrecks, cars that is.  After walking hundreds of miles we found them, and I thought to myself how silly we were 25 years ago. I was doing the same thing.   The only difference being…the cars hunted were Model T’s and A’s, everyday cars then are the hunted now…Shit I must be getting older.  Sunday lunch at the Criterion Hotel…Goodbyes and then off home.  Not to be…I was on holiday – DANGER!!!...got home Monday.

Thanks to Wayne and Wendy for a great weekend at their home.

Three quarters of a tank to Alex, half a tank home …Downhill or ‘Power Up’ Dennis?  MkI went well, in fact Bloody Well!                Allan, Grace and Dalley

Book Review

The Cars We Loved -- John McCrystall

By now, most Club members would have been contact by Allan Sim and encouraged to purchase a copy of John McCrystall’s book, “The Cars We Loved”  You, like me, may have been misled a little as Allan gave me the title being “The Cars I Loved In”

Anyway, we found copy at the Warehouse under the title of “The Cars We Loved”.

I was very keen to find out what other pages were in the book - other than, the front cover, the top right corner of the rear cover, pages 2, 3, 73, 81, 88 and 89, as I was of the belief all the other pages were blank.  To my surprise there is around120 other pages with Austins, Vauxhalls, Rover, Vanguard, Javelin, Fords, Hillman and so on!  I found page 87 very interesting reading.

Buy up while copies last, is my recommendation.  Along the line, it has been mentioned that  ”The Cars I Loved In” FAN CLUB is being formed.  For further details Phone Allan.

Outings Report – MILTON TRIP

We are writing this somewhat after the event, so won’t vouch for the accuracy of names.

After a leisurely drive from Invercargill, (no- one from Gore to meet) we arrived at Milton and had a spot of lunch with the Campbells whilst waiting for the others.  Cars arrived in dribs an’ drabs from all directions.  The one to attract the most attention was Tickled pink, Mike Nyhans’s Mk III Zephyr.  The stereo system cost about as much as our car!!!  The upholstery, from a woman’s’ perspective was lovely.  The men goggled the whole package for some time.  And this was the second reconstruction following an accident.  As per the norm, we departed after the Club president arrived, running late.  Excuses?  Modern cars were holding him up!

We traveled up the road and turned inland to the Fossil Museum.  We were met there by quarry manager, Mr Clark.  He told us about the limestone, the fossils found there, the museum etc, there was a shale vertebrae on display, along with fossils of other kinds, leaving in no doubt that the land we were standing on had been under the sea many millions of years ago.

We retraced our travels a little to look down on the quarry, for another talk about it before traveling onto the crushing plant and workshop.  There was much interest in the D8’s etc. and the pyramid shaped storage bin, for crushed and dry lime.  We were grateful we’d taken our gummies.

The trip concluded with a few drinks at the Milton Town and Country Club before we departed in diverse directions.  A pleasant day seeing parts of the country we wouldn’t see otherwise, in good company.                       Mike and Glenda

Outings Report - MID WINTER BUS TRIP

The bus (driven by Digger Crossan) picked us up at Ray and Pam Watson’s.  Already on board were Merv & Joyce Soper, and Dave & Jenny Blain.  We went around to pickup Goose and June only to find that June was unwell and Goose was going to stay home and play doctors.  No! not Doctors and Nurses, June was REALLY crook!  On to pickup Mike and Glenda Gutsell at the ‘Howl at the Moon’ (where did they get that name?)  café bar and that was it…all ten of us.  A quick drink there, and then back into the bus -- which was only a 12 seater, so it was really cosy.

Onwards to Mataura to take a look at Bruce and Karen’s MkII Zephyr (ex Andy Tuffley’s).  Looks really good with a complete panel and paint job.  Bruce only has a bit of upholstery work to finish and with a little bit of odds and ends to tidy up, it should be all go to Alexandra.  Now I will say here and now, that – “That was supposed to be the only car visit MERVYN!”  More later…

Around the corner from Bruce and Karen’s is the Mataura RSA.  Well you can’t get better than that can you.  Into the RSA for a quick handle or two and a yarn and then onward to Wyndham to the Three Rivers pub.  This is where Merv got side tracked.  You see we were all wearing silly hats for the trip and Merv’s hat happened to be a black woolen affair, which looked a hell of a lot like the hats worn by the Goreons.  You know the ones that drive around and around and around Gore in their Holdens, Falcons and Valiants .  They can’t afford good Zed cars.  Well, someone said that all Merv needed, was a Valiant to go with the hat! …and then guess what?  when we pull up outside the Wyndham pub -- what should be parked up, but a Valiant!   Well this was too much for Merv.  He had to have it.  So whilst the rest of us are inside the pub, Merv is outside negotiating with the female (yes female) owner to buy the said Valiant.  When we left the pub, after a handle or two, Merv made a last desperate bid (yeah I know – you would have to be desperate wouldn’t you?) to purchase the Valiant.  His last offer rejected, Merv climbs onto the bus with a final call that if they brought the car along to the Mataura Falls pub in about an hour, the offer still stood.

Back to the bus crooze. Although we were running short of time, we had to get past the Edendale pub.  No mean feat.  We couldn’t pull it off and the bus screeched to a halt outside the pub.  Well we thought it must have broken down, so what can a man and lady do, but wait inside for repairs. A handle or two later, someone decided that the bus wasn’t broken down after all so it was back on board and onward to the Mataura Falls pub.  Actually, I think that Merv was worried that the girls in the Valiant might be there to sell the car to him and he didn’t want to miss out on it.

At Mataura Falls pub Bruce and Karen were patiently waiting for us…well they weren’t patient, they had had their feed by the time we got there.  Not to worry, our feed was good anyway.  After a handle or two we walked (is that the right word?) next door to the Fire Brigade rooms to check out their hoses and pumps.  Well, the ones in the bar anyway.  The Brigade was running their annual car trial with the St John’s and the Police.  After the obligatory handle or two - or four, everyone had had their fill… and it was time for home Digger!.

Many thanks to Joyce and Merv also Pam and Ray for the bus crooze and nibbles etc.  and thanks to Pam and Ray for the bed.  A good trip.  Let’s see a few more people in the future.     Dennis

From the Editor

It has been a very busy few months, both for the club and me.  Looking back it is hard to remember what I was so busy doing.  However I’d like to make a special mention to Wayne and Wendy’s hospitality to those who stayed on, following the Blossom Festival.  They gave up their bed to put up all those who stayed with them, surely beyond the call of duty.  Furthermore, they provided the barbeque tea of sausages, bacon, marinated chicken salad etc. which everyone relished.  Thanks from everyone who shared the most enjoyable Saturday night, Sunday morning.

Glenda (and her patient assistant Mike).
