President’s Report

Hi members.  Well a quarter of the way through the year already   A great weekend at Kingston, with fine weather which made it even better.  Great to see Peter and Margaret down.  He will have to train a crew up to handle the strong winds on the lake with the new yacht.  Probably hard to do with a heap of petrol heads!.

However the Southern Connection is on in Christchurch on 29th March, with three cars and ten members going form our club.  Should be able to show the Southland colours with that many.

Also, the club is looking at buying a Mk4 Zephyr – plates on hold – needs a quick paint – She’s a good runner – having driven it myself.  Also auto.  I believe there are a heap of Mk4 parts that the club are short of.  A club car would be very handy for the Convention, for advertising businesses etc.  If anybody who wants to add something to this, for or against, please ring me.

Now with the convention less than 12 months away, we are going to start calling on members for help form now on, as thing will really speed up.  Talking of that, some input from members regarding the Sunday – the main run.  We need more ideas on this.  The plan was Riverton through to Manapouri and back – but decided this was too long for those that have already travelled a long way.   Keep in mind that the Model A club are going to Tuatapere Domain and I don’t know where the Hot Rod Club are going.  So any suggestions, let a committee member know as soon as.

That’s all for now….   Adrian

Club Captain’s Report

Hi everyone.

What a magic doo once again at Kingston with boats, beers, rock n roll, guitars and real drum sticks (for once).  Not as many cars this year, but a great crowd of members, and what a buzz to have those 5 hogs line up in front of our Z cars with Dallas swapping a ride with the owner of the most expensive and elite Harley money can buy for a ride in Allan’s Mk1 convertible.  (Excellent stuff).

A big thanks for Joyce and Merv for the use of their excellent new hideaway, gourmet BBQ, pool table and most of all a really ‘relax Inn’ times.

Club Outings…as no club outing has yet been organised for March, with the Christchurch Connection coming up at the end of the month, we will be looking at about mid-April for our next get together.  So if anyone can help with organising something it would be much appreciated as I am absolutely snowed under with work at the moment, and are struggling for time.

Other Stuff…To all Mk2 owners who don’t have their wiring system fused properly, (check it out) as our Mk2 decided to do a big burn out a few weeks ago when our wiring loom went on fit.  What a panic when the whole car filled with smoke instantly.  A ‘short’ from the park-light nearly cost us our car, so as mentioned above, check it out!.

PS if anyone needs instructions on how to disconnect a battery, remove dash switches and chrome etc.  , disconnect light switch, speedo cable and remove speedo in about 2 minutes flat, please phone 03 448-8670.

See you all soon,   Wayne, Wendy and Royden

Outings Report

The KINGSTON WEEKEND

We arrived from Wanaka on Friday evening, to park our bed at Merv & Joyce’s place, and had a welcome cup of tea.  Over the evening and next morning people arrived to settle themselves in for the weekend.  As is always the case, it was lovely to meet up with all the Zephyr and Zodiac Club members, and they were all in fine mood as usual.  For the Friday arrivals, we all adjourned to the pub for a lazy tea and drinks, (we always get a great welcome there) and the food was tasty.

On Saturday morning, we all gathered at the lake shore, and while some enjoyed the speed of the power boats, others had a serene trip on the yacht.  It was really nice to watch the children all enjoying themselves in the simple pursuit of splashing in the water at the edge of the lake for hours it seemed.

The weather was perfect, so we all enjoyed whatever we did, even if it was reading, having a wine or chat, and watching the activity on the lake.  Saturday night’s meal was as delicious as ever, the barbeque set up at Merv & Joyce’s with so many tasty things to choose from.

When Peter, Jan and I set off for our bed by the lake, the party was getting into full swing, but  I will leave someone else to comment on that.

Back to the house on Sunday for a huge breakfast, fit for a king.  The golfers arrived later, (and there was plenty of food left for them).  They looked as if they had all had a great morning.  After our meeting, every one prepared for the journey home - after a most enjoyable weekend. As we always have when we go to Kingston.  Thanks to Merv and Joyce for their great company and hospitality.

As always a great weekend in great company.        Tosh   (Wanaka)

Outings Report

CHRISTMAS 2001

With members always as interesting, and being our Christmas meeting - it was special.  Our first port-of-call was the Maze/Puzzle World at beautiful Wanaka, and all the members enjoyed seeing the alterations and additions.  The toilets were especially of interest, definitely a place for contemplation, even the Romans thought so.

The holographs were of great interest, the funny feeling you got going into the next building.  That was something else.  Watching Dennis leaning over perpendicular to the meeting up ladder on the wall was quite a thing to see although on Sunday, he was bent over even further on the road beside his car.  I don’t think it was an illusion?

Shooters bar in the centre of Wanaka was our next port-of-call, for drinks to cool us down, while we enjoyed looking out over the lake.  We set off on our way to Cromwell, to Goose and June’s place where we enjoyed our lovely Christmas meal and drinks.   Santa was very good to everyone, especially Mrs Santa.  I wonder why?...Something about a Consul!!!!  Santa gave us all very nice gifts with the late arrivals getting theirs on Sunday.  We said our farewells to some , and headed for Bannockburn and Skegg’s Winery, where some partook of the wine, and some the coffee.  We had a restful ‘sit down’ there out of the heart of a sultry day.  I think everyone enjoyed the weekend.

Hope you all have had a very good Christmas and Happy and Healthy 2002.

 .        Tosh   (Wanaka)

Obituary

DOUG RYAN

It is with a great deal of sadness that we note the passing on of one of our club members last month.  Doug Ryan passed away on the 15th January 2002.  Doug joined the Southland Zodiac & Zephyr club in 1987 together with his older brother Barry.  Both Doug and Barry have had an involvement with Zephyrs for many years.  Doug has owned Mk1 Consuls and Zephyrs, and Mk2 Zephyrs and more recently a Mk4 Zephyr which he has been restoring with Barry.  Whilst Doug’s cars would not always be eligible for concourse, he was a dedicated Zed car enthusiast and keen club members.

All those who met Doug will remember the guy who was always there to help anyone at anytime.  A guy who always had a grin on his face and a joke to tell, or play.  Members of our club formed a ‘guard of honour’ at Doug’s funeral and Dave and Jenny Blain’s Mk2 Ute was used to take Doug on his final cruise.

The Southland Zephyr and Zodiac Club, on behalf of all Zed people who knew Doug, wish to extend our deepest sympathy to Doug’s family.
