Coping in Hospital

  • General information about hospital

    • Children In Hospital "Child and Youth Health" website. A wealth of information on coping with a child in hospital.
    • Your Child's Anesthesia "Kids Health" website. General information on Anesthesia and children -ask your own hospital about their procedures. Also click on the 'Related Articles' tab on the right side of the page.
    • Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne This is where Cassidy had/will have all her surgery. A fantastic place!
  • Ideas to help your child cope better in hospital. Some are unusual, but keep an open mind!

    • Preparing for surgery Physical, emotional and mental preparation for surgery can help. In order to cover all three aspects, here's some ideas which integrate western medicine and eastern, holistic methods. Please note, dosages stated are for adults, there is a link on the site for child dosages at the bottom of the page. Beware when giving supplements to your child, some can be dangerous. You MUST tell the nurses what supplements you are giving your child.
    • Surgery and NutritionThinking of vitamin supplements to help your child cope with surgery? It may be a good idea if your child's diet is lacking. Scroll down on the linked page above and read "Importance of Nutrition During Illness". Please note, I am not endorsing their products, it's the info that is interesting. Beware when giving supplements to your child, some can be dangerous. You MUST tell the nurses what supplements you are giving your child.
    • Clown Doctors "The Humour Foundation" website. Clown Doctors visit children in hospital to make it less intimidating and provide the kids and parents alike with the proven benefits laughter.
    • Reflexology For Children According to researchers at the Stockport NHS Trust, Anaesthetic Department in England, a foot massage can help alleviate pain in patients following surgical operations. Scroll down on the linked page above and read "Kid Stuff--Working on Baby". I did a little amateur reflexology on Cassidy and it worked like a charm!
    • Meditation For Children My daughter had positive results using a form of meditation (she imagined kittens were sitting on her hip, purring!). The instructions are easy for kids to understand or for you to share with your child. Give it a go, it can't do any harm!
