10k Epic Armageddon - Orks vs Marines

BREAKOUT!

This is a report of a 10,000 points a side game, Orks versus Marines using the 'Breakout' scenerio for Epic Armageddon. It was played at my place on November 11th, 2005. Mike and I used my Orks. Dave Wallace used his Ultramarines. John used my Dark Angels and one of Dave's Reaver Titans. We used a 6'x8' table. The orks deployed in the middle of the table in a 40cm wide strip. At one short table edge was the Ultramarine force, and at the other short table edge the Dark Angels. The marines deployment zones extended 45cm from the table edge.

The ork objective was simple - get half their forces (as measured by Army Points totals) off either short table edge. For this purpose warbands and war engines under half strength would count as half army points, as would broken warbands. A broken formation under half strength would count as zero army points for exiting the table. The marines objective was simple - stop the orks doing this!

DEPLOYMENT

Above the initital deployment can be seen. Mike and I decided to leave a rearguard to deal with the ultramarines, while the main ork force tried to smash its way through the Dark Angels. After the orks deployed the marines set up, mostly behind cover and mounted in their transports ready to react to ork movement.

TURN 1

The orks begin by launching airstrikes against the Dark Angel artillery. Only one ork pilot is shot down and the rest knock out a Hunter and Whirlwind.

At the other end of the battlefield a Battlefortress Mob engages an Ultramarine Devastator and Tactical Detachment that have advanced too far forward. The orks drive at full speed over dangerous terrain and disaster strikes! A battlefortress flips and explodes - killing all on board! The remnants of the mob crash into the Marines and in a bloody and confused fight both sides are broken and retreat.

On the Dark Angel left flank the orks attack strongly with a Blitz Brigade, Battlefortress mob, Stompas and supporting Gargant fire. The marines reinforce to stop the orks breaking through by committing the Force Commanders Detachment.

On the right the orks attack with two more Blitz Brigades and the Kommando Warband. The Kommandos are routed by a combined firefight launched by two marine tactical detachments.

In the Dark Angel centre another Battlefortress Mob and Great Gargant press forwards. The Reaver Titan pours sustained fire into the Gargant stripping away its power fields. Marine Whirlwinds shell Ork Blitz Brigades.

In the background another Ork Blitz Brigade is annihilated by a Thunderhawks carrying Devastator Detachments into an air asault. With the ork left rearguard smashed, Ultramarine Bikes and Landspeeders race through the position unimpeded.

The remaining Great Gargant powers straight towards the Ultramarine line firing ineffectually at the Reaver Titan. Return fire strips off some of its power fields.

TURN 2

Continuing its charge the Great Gargant smashes into the Ultramarine Tactical Marines and Whirlwinds, breaking both formations. The Reaver is too far away to support the Marines, but its guns finally punch some holes in the Great Gargants armour.

On the Dark Angel right flank the Ultramarine Terminators teleport in and engage an ork Blitz Brigade with assitance from Dark Angel Tactical marines. The Ork Blitz Brigade is wiped out, and the marines advance to secure the flank. Whirlwind fire shatters the remaining Blitz Brigade.

In the centre of the Dark Angel line the Ork Battlefortress Mob assaults the Reaver Titan! The Reaver loses all its Void Shields, and takes damage, but beats off the ork assault (the orks roll double one for combat resolution)! The Ork Mob exits the table, and the Great Gargant sustains fire damaging the Reaver's reactor and reducing it to one damage capacity remaining.

On the Dark Angel left flank the Dark Angels Deathwing Terminators arrive and combine with Tactical Marines to engage and smash the Ork Battlefortress Mob. The Orks retaliate by engaging with their Stompa Mob, and firing with the Gargant and Blitz Brigade, breaking the Terminator Formations. The Blitz Brigade is then attacked by Landspeeders and wiped out by an Ultramarine air assault. The Ultramarine air assault is destroyed in turn by Ork Stormboyz with support from the Stompa Mob. Assault marines then rout the Stormboyz, leaving just a very shot up Stompa Mob stubbornly holding on as they are peppered with Predator fire.

As the turn ends things are looking very grim for the orks. A charge of buggies into the Dark Angel Artillery and Devastators is repulsed and the Great Gargant catches fire. Gretchin Riggers fail to put out the flames and a magazine is ignited starting another major fire! Simultaneously the badly damaged reactor of the Reaver Titan gives out and it is consumed in a huge explosion.

Unfortunately for the Orks casualties have been horrendous... doing a quick tally of points - it becomes apparent that if every ork unit on the table rallies and gets off the table intact then the orks will have scored 4890 victory points. As achieving even this impossible task will not secure victory, the marines are declared victors!

CONCLUSION

Well done to the marine players, who did nearly everything right. We the ork players divided up our forces too much and were defeated in detail. We needed to just choose a flank, smash the marine defenders and pour through the hole. Instead we ended up just attacking everywhere, and nowhere strongly enough to break a hole. It takes some adapting to switch from the usual satisfying ork tactics of stomping everything you can reach and getting at the enemy as quickly as possible! Probably we should have launched our primary attack upon the more mobile and less numerous on the ground Ultramarines, rather than the more static Dark Angel Forces - but we were planning to take advantage of the superior protection afforded by the terrain on the Dark Angel table side.

So to sum up another great game of Epic Armageddon! If you want to try something a bit different from the usual tournament game setup I recommend you try the Breakout scenario too!
