This game was a 3000 point meeting engagement, Tyranids against Adeptus Astartes (Storm Cloud Space Marine Chapter) with Titan Legion support. James Mansfield used his Tyranids while Paul Hutton used his Imperials. Rules were E40k with FP1 amendments and a few houserules. I was actually playing a game of DBM on a table nearby but still had time to get a record of this game!

TURN 1

Turn 1 Positions

Both sides advance, Imperial Landspeeders manage to retrieve a rescue objective.

TURN 2

Shooting Phase Turn 2

The Tyranids charge toward the Imperial lines. The Imperials form up on overwatch orders. Two Marine Thunderhawks airlift in Terminators and Dreadnoughts to reinforce the Imperial left flank. The large Tyranid Dactylis Bio-Artillery brood remains out of range of the best targets, but severely maul the airlifted Terminators.

The Tyranid left flank suffers badly from heavy Imperial fire. An Imperial Warlord critically injures the Hierophant with Deathray class weaponary, but not enough to stop the huge creature. On the Tyranid right flank the Hierodule is also badly injured.

Assault Phase Turn 2

In the assault phase the Tyranids swarm onto the Imperial right flank. Casualties are heavy on both sides and the Imperials are thrown back.

TURN 3

Turn 3

The Tyranids continue pressing the assault but casualties have been too heavy. Some broods are halted in confusion with all their synapse creatures dead. The Hierodule dies, crushing some Imperial units as it is brought down. The Imperials continue to gun down the Tyranids, and the Hive-Mind decides to retreat its remaining forces (or to put it another way James concedes :)).

CONCLUSION

Well it was one of the first games for James so it was a learning experience for his Epic Tyranids. He realised too late that not utilising the superior ranged capabilities of his large Dactylis brood was a critical mistake. With their 60cm range the Dactylis could have been used to force the mostly 45cm range Imperials to close to more vulnerable postitions. Charging the unweakened Imperial line immediately resulted in too many bugs dead too quickly. Still I got some great photos and I am sure the Epic Tyranids of James will resemble his 40k Tyranids as a force to be feared very soon!
