MARCH MEETING

There was a large attendance with several new members who were welcomed. Ayesha Verrall , Student President  at OUSA was the speaker. Meeting her was a pleasure, and the things she had to say, stimulated a very helpful and interesting discussion.

APRIL MEETING

Sixteen people attended in spite of appalling weather. We have a speaker at alternate meetings, so this meeting concentrated on general discussion of our work and sharing amongst members of our common concerns.

 WEBSITE

The website seems to be gathering  interest both in N. Z and outside it. We have had over 700 hits to date. An analysis of these hits shows that the stories section seems to be what most people are interested in. So we discussed how soon two more stories could be ready to add to the site

AN UNEXPECTED BONUS

One member spoke of telling her gay son that she was now going to PFLAG. He had then told her of the difficulties he had faced at school with bullying, which she had not been properly aware of at the time. Although she had thought that her grief was over, the opportunity for them to communicate about these painful experiences had been of value. PFLAG was the catalyst.

Another member pointed out that it is easy for those of us who have coped with all the trauma of “coming out” and now feel it is all behind us, to forget to make the effort to remember how it was for us, and to share the things we may be finding hard still. We often find that when someone shares something they feel inadequate about, that others will feel reassured that are not the only one! We have decided to discuss a topic at some meetings, e.g. How did you find it when you first found out? If we share in depth then we can be of more use to newer members.

 NEXT MEETING

Will be on Monday 28th May at Community House at the corner of Great King St and Moray Place on the first floor. There will be a speaker from the Otago Youth Wellness Trust.

The Meeting begins at 7.30, but we assemble  for tea and coffee from about 7.10

New friends and families most welcome to attend.
