DIAMOND CREEK

Netball Club

A pathway to Kestrels

Diamond Creek FORCE Netball Club History

The Diamond Creek Netball Club began as a result of a group of 11 year olds
wishing to play netball in 1982. As there was no club in the area a group of
parents who played netball began coaching. It soon became apparent that
there was a huge “untapped” need in the community as other youngsters
approached the parents to coach their children. Initially two teams were
entered into a competition playing on two outdoor courts at Sacred Heart
Primary School on Saturday mornings.

The Club grew from there and a committee was formed and a constitution
adopted to formalize the club. Committee meetings were held in the member’
s homes as they had no home base. Competition then moved to St Helena
Secondary College where there were four outdoor courts. The committee then
took over the responsibility of running the competition at St Helena,
purchasing the competition from the previous proprietors. At this stage as well
as the Diamond Creek Club teams, teams from local areas such as  Sacred
Heart Primary School, Hurstbridge, Wattle Glen, Eltham College and
Greenhills. Primary entered the competition. The competition then ran from
9.00 am until after 3.00 pm on Saturdays.

As the competition could not grow further unless better facilities were found,
the committee lobbied and liaised with the then Diamond Valley Council for a
proper netball facility for the young females (and some males) for an
appropriate sporting complex. In 1995 the netball club moved to its current
location Diamond Street, Diamond Creek. Since that time both the Diamond
Creek Netball Club and the Association have grown rapidly.

In more recent times the committee also purchased a night competition which
had been privately operated. This became the financial underpinning for the
club assisting with the purchasing of equipment, uniforms and cost for
tournaments. Structures were put into place to accommodate the needs of
netballers from the age of six (Netta Netball) through the State League. With
the inception of The State Association Championships in 2000 DCFNA has
been State Champions two years running(15’s in 2002 and 17’s in 2003)

The club has also worked hard over the years to provide a number of
pathways for umpires and coaches as well as  players. We have umpires ,
coaches and players breaking through to elite levels.

In 2002 DCNA formed an alliance with Melbourne Kestrels and was nominated
as a target association. We are now a feeder association providing a pathway
for players, coaches and support staff to the National Level.
