PFLAG
SOUTH NEWSLETTER: JUNE 2006
President's Report
It is with great pleasure that I write our first Annual
Report as an Incorporated Society. The committee accomplished this at
the beginning of 2006 after months of patient work.
Looking back over the year since the large AGM in May 2006, this has
been a busy year. Our projects have been:
- Library books in schools. We
provided several informative books to the libraries of each of the
Dunedin High Schools and also East Otago High in Palmerston.
At the same time we provided a set of leaflets for school counsellor,
and a copy of “What PFLAG Does” a description of our work and the
services we offer.T he responses were very good except for three of
the schools. This expensive project was provided for by generous
donations.
- In July PFLAG was on a panel run
by the Department of Psychological Medicine, for 100 medical students,
about Sexual Identity. We provided 700 leaflets as part of this, and
from the number of questions asked , this was a success.
- As our part of Pride Week five
of our members had a display and gave out leaflets in the Octagon.
- In May 2006 We have had a stall
at the Public Health South Mental Health Expo for year 10 High School
students. We printed and gave away around 1500 leaflets on this
occasion. We acknowledge the generous donation from North Dunedin
Rotary which allowed us to put together this stall.
A check through the PFLAG diary ,
confirms that we have formed helpful links with several Community and
Government Organisations, such as the Police, Public Health South , Aids
Foundation., Student Health, Citizens Advice, and Youthline.
DONATIONS
We have been grateful for generous and unexpected donations from “The
Black Madonna”, a community group set up to help and inspire GLBT people
and also, from Dunedin North Rotary, and also one from COGS
PUBLICITY
Leaflets
We provided 2,500 leaflets last year ,for the community, 300 of these
which were taken from the stand at the Dunedin Public Library.
WEBSITE
There were around 1000 hits and several messages, questions and contacts
made, which indicate that it is useful to people. I would like to see us
adding current information to it, more regularly.
LIBRARY
Several new books have been added to the library and we have moved
towards the future by turning some of our Videos into DVD form
NEW BRANCHES OF PFLAG
It is wonderful that we have been able to encourage and support new
PFLAG groups being formed in Hamilton and Invercargill. These two groups
have found our resources and library useful.
CELL PHONE
Has been used for 14 new contacts and advice
during the year from all around NZ and Sydney.
MEETINGS
The most vital part of PFLAG continues to be our support group meetings
which are attended by an ever wonderful and interesting group who have
always been ready with their wisdom and empathy. We have had several
interesting speakers including David Benson- Pope and a larger meeting
with Georgina Beyer. We also have enjoyed three social events.
NEW OFFICE
Our office is still part of Methodist Connect. We have moved to a lovely
warm modern building at 300 King Edward Street, beside the blue United
Video store.
FUTURE DIRECTIONS
We will continue to work hard much as we have been doing to provide as
well as we can for the Health and well-being of GLBT people and their
families, to offer accurate information and to continue to be a point of
contact with community agencies.
FINALLY
A very special thanks to the committee without whose loyalty hard work
,and talents, and personal support of me in my work, none of this would
have possible.
